Abstract:
The main pillar of any knowledge-based economy, is having a well-skilled, talent and capable human capital to navigate the volatile, uncertain, challenging and ambiguous world. UAE since its inception has realized that the development of a nation cannot be realized without investing in people and creating a conducive environment for them to realize their maximum potential. The emergence of the 4th industrial Revolution (4iR) has created tremendous opportunities for human prosperity while posing some challenges which cannot be resolved if the collaborative framework is not adopted through which Government, academia and industries need to put their collective efforts together in order to bring about solution to these challenges.

Coursera, a global online learning platform, led a student and employer-focused survey that explored the motivations, needs, and challenges of students pursuing a degree and employers seeking to hire them. The survey findings show that 97% of students in the UAE trust that an industry micro-credential will help them secure a job and 88% of them strongly agree that it will help them succeed in a job. On the other hand, 77% of employers believe industry micro-credentials help a candidate stand out and 57% of employers are more likely to hire a graduate that has a degree and an industry micro-credentials. In the UAE, sectors such as technology and startups are flourishing at a rapid pace. Employers are seeking talent ready with in-demand digital skills. This further necessitates universities to incorporate more skills-based training and job-relevant content into their curriculum to prepare students for jobs of the future. University leaders can better prepare students for job outcomes by supplementing their highly valuable degrees with industry micro credentials.
