H.E. Saeed Ahmed Ghobash, UAEU Chancellor, has honored the winners of the "Chancellor’s
Innovation Award" in the presence of HE Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Albaili, UAEU Vice chancellor
and a number of faculty members and students.
H.E. UAEU Chancellor has emphasized the important role of innovation for students and researchers in the University, and the care of the wise leadership to maintain the position of the UAE as an advanced model in building the knowledge-economy and the UAE Innovation month, which is organized under the directives of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum , as this became an important national event in accordance with the vision of the future, strengthens the role of the UAE in the field of innovation worldwide, and he said, "Innovation at the UAEU has become a solid culture among researchers, employees and students, and we strive to accomplish the goals of UAE’s strategy and to envision the future effectively and efficiently through the provision of innovative and practical projects in the fields of technology, renewable energy, transport, health, education and space science and we will strive in our pursuit of excellence to contribute to building research teams of students and researchers that will develop qualitative research and innovative ideas.”
The winning projects were awarded in accordance with the scientific criteria of the award and included three innovative projects in the technology, health and space - the student award category, with two projects in the areas of water resources and renewable energy - the faculty members’ award category, and two projects in the technology and space - the staff award category.
The faculty members’ category – the water resources area the winner was Dr. Elke Neumann and Dr. Safdar Muhamed from -College of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Fadi Al Naimat, and Prof. Khaled A. Al-Sallal, College of Engineering. The innovative project was "Artificial Valleys as an alternative for water-saving to greenhouses in the United Arab Emirates" and in the renewable energy , the research project "Inexpensive, environmentally-friendly cellulose hydroxy-derived from date palm waste in the country and used for desalination, carbon dioxide capture and improved oil extraction "completed by PhD students Amira Fares, Emmanuel Galwiango, Jawad Mustafa, Essa Lwissa and Prof. Ali Hamid Al Marzouqi and - Department of Chemical Engineering, college of Engineering.
With regards to the staff award category- Mr. Hasan Mohammed from the Department of Nutrition - College of Food and Agriculture won in the technology criteria for the project “Food color with healthy benefits of palm leaf (waste as resources)” whilst in the space criteria, Eng. Muthanna Ahmed Aziz and Dr. Waleed Khalil Ahmed from College of Engineering won for their project “The design of an ideal & innovative Nano satellite and capable of testing multiple materials in space with different properties.”
For the student award category- technology criteria the winner was a research project on “The production of an anti-rust material from the waste of the UAE palm tree” by Noor Shehada Abdul Rahman under the supervision of Prof. Ali Hamid Al Marzouqi , Department of Chemical Engineering , College of Engineering . Whilst in the health criteria, the winners were Alia Mohammed Al Blooshi ,Afraa Obeid AlMehairi , Dina Ayman AlJamal, Maryam Suleiman AlHassani under the supervision of Dr. Bobby Matthew , College of Engineering for their project "A medical device for early detection of cardiovascular disease”. For the space criteria, the winners were two students: Mouza Saeed Al Mansoori and Afra Rashed Al Mheiri from the Department of Mechanical Engineering College of Engineering and under the supervision of Dr. Khaula Abdullah Alkaabi, Department of Geography and Urban Planning, College of Humanities and Social Sciences,
The announcement of the award happens at the beginning of each academic year in order to attract students, faculty and staff to present their innovative work and research projects in a framework that supports innovative thinking and that honors the initiators of innovative achievements and qualitative research projects.
