The European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) is part of the European contribution to the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) program. This program aims to generate long-term series of Essential Climate Variables (ECV), as defined by GCOS, to have a relevant role in the global Earth and climate system. This lecture will briefly review the framework of the ESA CCI program and the summary of the main outputs of phase-1 (2010-2014), to focus later on how the Fire disturbance variable was generated, validated and analyzed by end-users ( atmospheric and vegetation modeling communities).
